Deadline to apply for FEMA assistance extended

Governor Robert Bentley said during an interview on WSFA 12 News' 11:00am program Alabama Live! that he'd requested an extended deadline from FEMA for Alabamians to register for Federal Disaster Assistance.

Late in the day the Governor' office confirmed that FEMA agreed to the extension. The new registration deadline has been set at July 18, 2011 - a 21 day extension.

"I want survivors to understand the importance of registering with FEMA and filling out all necessary paperwork, including the SBA loan applications, which is not just for business owners, but also can assist homeowners and renters as well," said Governor Bentley. "Not returning an SBA application closes the door for other federal assistance opportunities."

The U.S. Small Business Administration's loan application deadline is also being extended. It will also stretch until July 18.

Identified: Boaters drown on Coosa in Chilton Co.

The Chilton County Sheriff's office is releasing the identities of two boaters who died after their vessel capsized on the Coosa River late Tuesday night.

The bodies of John L. Tice Jr. of Montgomery and Jason P. Thomas of Marbury were located by divers in the water just below the Mitchell Dam just before noon Wednesday.

Thomas' son, an unidentified 14-year-old, was found six hours earlier by a passing boater. The boy was clinging to a piece of concrete in the river.

The boy told authorities he, his father and his father's friend were fishing around midnight when the boat started taking on water. All three individuals quickly ended up in the water.

Verbena Fire & Rescue, Care Ambulance Service, and the Chilton County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the scene where they found the boat floating upside down in the water.

July 4th DUI roadway safety campaign to kick off

July 4th DUI roadway safety campaign to kick off

MONTGOMERY, AL  - The roadway can pose a serious problem when travelling during the 4th of July weekend. That is why The Council on Substance Abuse-NCADD, Central Alabama Law Enforcement Committee (CALEC), Alabama Department of Public Safety and Alabama Marine Police and surrounding law enforcement agencies say they will be cracking down on impaired driving June 30th - July 4th.

Statistics gathered from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over the past 25 years show that, on average, nearly half of all deadly traffic crashes over each year’s July 4th holiday involved some level of alcohol.

Alcohol impairs many of the skills that safe driving requires, including judgment, concentration, comprehension, coordination, visual acuity and reaction time.

Deadline to apply for SBA disaster loans is Monday

The Small Business Administration says only a small percentage of applications for disaster loans related to the late April tornadoes in Alabama have been returned.

The deadline to apply is Monday, June 27th.  The agency is urging those who had storm-related damage to apply to determine eligibility for a low interest loan, even if they are not sure they will need one because it qualifies you for other types of aid. They add that victims should not wait until they have settled with their insurance companies.

More than 80% of SBA disaster loans are for home owners and renters.
